Hijacked Brands Reach Record Level In Q4
Share |

Cybercrime syndicates are expanding the base of brands they exploit for online fraud beyond major financial institutions and online merchants, according to a new report from the Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG).

The number of hijacked brands reached a record 356 in October, up nearly 4.4 percent from the previous record of 341 in August 2009.

"No brand is safe from the threat of spoofing for the purposes of online fraud. Once, only the largest banks were targeted," said Peter Cassidy, APWG Secretary General.

"Now, every kind of enterprise from banks and credit unions of all sizes to charities to, in a recent case, a hardware manufacturer, are now seeing their brands exploited in all manner of fraud scheme."

While the number of unique phishing reports submitted to the APWG in Q4 declined nearly 29 percent from a record high of 40,621 in August, dropping to 28,897 reports in December, the stats don't reflect a more troubling trend. Member reports to APWG and research reviews in Q3 and Q4, reveal a significant increase in phishing focused on high value targets such as people in charge of finances.

"Spear-phishing and whale-phishing, where targeted individuals inside of corporations, or of high net worth, appears to be increasing," said Dave Jevans, APWG Chairman.

"Phishers and malware attackers are sending emails to individuals in a highly targeted fashion, attempting to gain access to corporate online banking systems, corporate VPN networks, and other online resources."

"These attacks do not contribute significantly to the overall number of unique phishing emails that are/> [...]

Flash Now Importable to HTML5 Canvas
Share |

cs5.jpgAdobe will soon introduce its Creative Suite 5 to the public. A tool in the new suite will allow for easy import of Flash animations into HTML5 Canvas code. Once IE9 launches, all major browsers will support Canvas. At that point, any Flash creation can be viewable by just about anyone without downloading the Flash plugin. It also means, clearly, that devices that cannot accept the plugin can nonetheless run the animations built on it.

Those who are excited about this probably think of Flash is a space hog. As ReadWriteWeb has discovered, it sometimes is, though not always.

One of the points of interest regarding this development is the fact that Apple products block flash from "access to the required APIs." HTML5 may prove a way around for Flash users and the users of Apple devices, like the iPhone and iPad who wish to use the content.

On the video below, "Adobe Flash Platform Evangelist" Michael Chaize compares performance of Flash 10.1 and HTML5 on mobile devices.

Layar Looks to Create the App Store of Mobile Augmented Reality
Share |

Over the past few months, we here at ReadWriteWeb have been hard at work putting together our upcoming premium report on marketing in the augmented reality (AR) space. From our research we've discovered that for several years, desktop "webcam AR" developers have made created multi-million dollar businesses while the younger "mobile AR" companies have yet to really break the bank. Today, however, Dutch mobile AR company Layar may change the mobile AR landscape, as it has announced it will allow developers of AR layers to monetize their creations on the Layar platform.

Of the major mobile AR browsers, Layar, available now on Android phones and making an anticipated return to the iPhone later this month, has the widest selection of content to browse through. In a press release today, the company boasts 375 active layers, 1200 layers in development, and over 1 million users of its application.

Previously, businesses could create their own layer and place it in the free Layar directory; now those same business can reap the commercial benefits of augmented reality. When the service launches in March, Android users will be able to purchase layers from directly within the Layar application, and the iPhone version will likely make use of the in-app purchase function.

"Layar will facilitate global mobile payment processing and distribution in all currencies," the company announced today. "Producers can fully focus on content - without having to worry about mass market distribution, developing for multiple mobile platforms, or/> [...]

Starting with a Virtual Assistant
Share |

Starting this week I’m going to be experimenting with a virtual assistant to help me and Chess Media Group get tasks done.  Over the past few months I’ve spent far too much time on tasks that can easily be delegated to someone else such as email, basic research, information gathering, and document creation.  I’ll admit that although I’ve been considering hiring a virtual assistant for some time that it was Tim Ferriss’s book the Four Hour Workweek, that finally pushed me over the edge to actually get started with a VA.

The company that we are using is the top rated VA company on Elance called Transform Solution.  I wasn’t able to find anyone complaining about privacy issues with them and we have a secure contract and NDA in place with as well.  In addition Tranform also has their own safety measures implemented internally to help avoid any unethical conduct.  Needless to say, I feel quite safe working with them and so does every other business that’s been using their solution.  Most of the people I have spoken to all say that you have to give up some amount of control in order to make your VA experience the most impactful, and I’m completely fine with that.   The goal is to eventually build a relationship with the VA to make him a part of the team.  I want someone that make decisions on my behalf (up to a certain extent) so that I can focus on other things.

I’ve been trying to make it a habit to only check emails twice a day at 11am and 4pm.  Anything in between that window will be read and/> [...]
